It’s quite possible, that upon hearing this album, you will have one of three desires.

You will want to stop the album, throw it away, and try to quickly forget whatever auditory abortion you just heard.

You will want to stop the album, and find some type of sharp object, (preferably, parts of the broken CD), and stab yourself in the face, ears, and scrotum (or appropriate appendage).

You will want to stop the album and ridicule a talented musician who missed the mark so badly that you will never forgive him.

Review:

Scream is the latest solo outing from talented vocalist Chris Cornell. Most will know Cornell from Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave (3 bands I enjoy tremendously.)

You might only know him from Casino Royale, as he did the title song for that fantastic film.

But however it is you’ve come to know Chris Cornell, upon hearing this album, you will wish you didn’t expect anything from him.

The album starts out terribly enough, as an unsuspecting listener, I was expecting his collaboration with Timbaland to be both interesting AND pleasant. Interesting, yes. Pleasant? If you like hearing a talented, yet obviously misguided vocalist try to freshen his style, and/or like having your testicular sack crushed by a twenty-pound pack of potatoes, then yes, it’s quite pleasant.

I have absolutely no problem with an artist trying to broaden their horizons. It’s been effective for a number of them. Working outside your comfort zone can yield some fantastic results. Just not this time.

And it’s most troubling, because Cornell is talented, and has been in, lets count it again, THREE fantastic bands. However, with that, you have to assume there is a reason those bands broke up in the first place, and since Cornell is the common denominator, let’s blame him.

Scream was released in March of ’09, and it was mentioned to someone that I enjoyed Cornell, and they took it upon themself to get me a copy of the album. I popped it in, and couldn’t believe my ears.

The thing is, the album got worse as I listened to it. As each song ended, it was replaced by one that was even more misguided than the one before it. Truly, 13 songs worth of sheer hell.

Let me rephrase that. 6 1/2 songs of sheer hell. What of the other 5 songs, then? Well, I skipped over the ends of pretty much every song.

Songs that include Cornell almost rapping. Songs that include him almost barking like a dog. I would rather listen to the death rattle of one of my future children then be forced to listen to this again. (Thank you, David Cross, for that line.)

Overall, the album got me thinking. Cornell, a fantastic Grunge/Rock vocalist, produced this. What if Kurt Cobain had went this way with his career? Would the results have been any better?

Trick question. Cobain wasn’t a ego-driven sellout.

Final Words:

If you enjoy Chris Cornell, stay away from this record. If you enjoy music, stay away from this record. If you enjoy not being suicidal, stay away from this record. It actually troubles me to classify this as a “Music” review. Because, I assure you, this is NOT music.

Score: 0/10 (In the running for worst album I’ve ever heard)

Execution: 0/10
Musical Innovation: 0/10
Musical Merit: 0/10
Worthlesness: 10/10

Overview:

Really? Tobacco free cigarettes? How pointless, right? Wrong. I’ll tell you what is pointless. Pointless is those energy cigarettes I reviewed a while back that make you want to run but you can’t because you’re busy hacking up your lungs. I absolutely hate those stupid things. Anyway, it’s review time!

I recently broke my addiction to smoking cigarettes, which is always a good thing. However, I still find comfort in holding a burning stick that releases carbon monoxide into my lungs and the environment killing both myself and any 6 year old with asthma. That’s where these become useful, they’re like the near beer of smokeable tobacco. If you’re bored while driving and start craving a smoke, light up one of these. If all your friends are smoking around the campfire and you really want to fit in, light up one of these. If you really want to look cool for the ladies without dying from cancer (as quickly), light up one of these.

Review:

Disclaimer: Smoking anything fills your lungs with carbon-monoxide which is a huge cause of cancer. I do not condone or recommend smoking of any kind, and this review is only for people who already smoke and are looking for a new product.

When opening a pack of Ecstacy Tobacco and Nicotine-free cigarettes, the first thing you’ll notice is the smell. It’s a very sharp, spice-like odor, almost like oregano or marjoram which shouldn’t be all that surprising since these are herbal cigarettes. It’s strange at first, as you’ll likely be expecting these to smell a lot closer to traditional cigarettes. Once they are lit they stop smelling like common kitchen herbs and start to smell exactly like burning grass. The odor doesn’t stick as bad as most cigarettes or cigars, but people will notice it on you.

The taste is very hard to describe off the top of my head so I’m going to go smoke another one to make sure I’m as accurate with my description as I can be. I’ll be right back.

…

Back. The flavor is very light and sharp and tastes nothing like tobacco. In fact, it’s almost the exact opposite. Tobacco is very full, rich, and robust whereas these herbal cigarettes are light, sharp, and almost sour. You pick up a slightly sweet flavor on the tip of your tongue when taking hits, but can taste almost nothing on the inhale. When you exhale, however, prepare to be overwhelmed with a sour, sharp herbal flavor that will burn your throat with a slight stinging sensation. A couple of hits in you’ll learn the proper way to hit these cigarettes without hurting yourself, but you’ll always notice the sour flavor and sharp, light texture of the smoke.

Inside the pack are 20 class-A herbal filtered cigarettes. My pack only ran me 3 bucks at my local cigar shop, but I’ve seen them go for upwards of $6 for a single pack online. I cannot recommend spending more than $4 on these things, but if you can find them at your local tobacco or cigar stores then they will likely be fairly cheap.

Final Words:

Ecstacy cigarettes are a great substitute for real cigarettes for anyone honestly trying to quit smoking or anyone who has already defeated their addiction but is experiencing cravings again. I could also recommend these to anyone looking for something to smoke casually just for the heck of it. I enjoyed these enough to want to pick up some other flavors by Ecstacy and experiment with other brands.

Pros

Tobacco and Nicotine-free

Great for people trying to quit smoking, or keeping cravings at bay

Cons

Carbon monoxide is still a threat

Smell like burning grass

Sharp, sour flavor during exhale

Score: 7.5/10 (Average)

Odor: 7.0/10 (Smell alright before lighting, afterwards they just smell like burning grass)
Flavor: 7.75/10 (Once you learn the proper way to hit them, they aren’t too bad)
Value: 7.75/10 (Don’t spend more than 4 dollars on them and you are fine)

Overview:

A fantastic film, powered by a moving lead performance by a resurgent Mickey Rourke, is not only a treat for a huge Wrestling Smark like me, but for movie goers everywhere.

Review:

The film is the 4th release of Darren Arronofsky, and it’s quite simple to say that he hit the ball out of the park on this one. He presents us with a world both seedy and underground, but genuine and real as well. His direction style works well, and the film actually plays like a documentary. It looks grimy and real, sweaty and true all at the same time. A lot of that is because he chose to use a lot of real people in this film. Real wrestlers with no acting experience, real people in the grocery store, real people everywhere. It adds a lot of, you guessed it, realism to a film that could have ended up alienating an audience that is not familiar with the world in takes place in.

There are little things throughout the movie that stuck out to be as fantastic little additions, like Randy’s action figure, or the Nintendo game where he plays as himself against a kid as The Ayatollah, his one-time arch nemesis.

The real stand-out, as anyone and everyone heard around Awards season last year, is Mickey Rourke. As Randy ‘The Ram” Robinson, he completely dives off the turnbuckle into the role, and he succeeds in every single way.

As a fan of pro-wrestling, I’m familiar not only with the world in which “The Ram” finds himself, but with versions of the character himself. Throughout the world of wrestling, these men actually do exist. Men who break their bodies for a few bucks, with no health insurance, no retirement plan, and plenty of vices all around tempting them to blow what little money they do have.

As Randy works through his demons, and the chance at another big match (a re-match with The Ayatollah), he also works to repair a relationship with an estranged daughter, works to create a relationship with a stripper.

The film is full of powerful and poignant scenes, and there is one in particular that stuck out to me. Randy, working in a Supermarket, gets moved from the back of the store, to a prominent role in the deli, to which he initially does not want to do. But as he starts behind the counter, throughout the day, he starts realizing that he can use his skills as a wrestler to please the crowd, and to make his work-day just a little bit easier.

But soon his greatest fear his realized, as he’s recognized by an old fan, and Randy soon resorts back to his wrestling training once again, using some misdirection and throwing his hand into a slicer and quitting, as he gains the bug to perform in his natural environment once again.

Final Words:

The film is fantastic, start to finish. Even people who aren’t as involved in wrestling as I am can enjoy the film for what it is. A very good piece of work from a reborn actor and a consistently good director. It’s not just a film about wrestling. It’s an intimate character study about a man who happens to be a wrestler.

Score: 9.0/10 (Superb)

Overview:

Before we get started, let’s make one thing clear. There is an absolutely huge difference between energy drinks and energy supplements. Energy drinks are made to be delicious beverages with loads of sugar and artificial sweeteners to tickle your taste buds whereas energy supplements are meant to supply you with energy without killing your kidneys in the process.

Verve supplement is from the same people that created the ultra-powerful, award winning antioxidant juice known as Vemma, and contains the same beneficial ingredients plus a few extras to give you an energetic boost. Verve sponsors several major league sport teams and is highly enjoyed and recommended by athletes all over America.

Review:

Keep in mind this isn’t a drink for lovers of your standard energy drink, this is a powerful and healthy dietary supplement that is meant to do far more than give you an energy rush. Verve claims to boost your immune system, support your digestive system, maintain healthy eyes, skin, and hair, and give you the abundance in energy you expect from an energy drink. Does this sound completely ridiculous to you? I thought so too, until I turned the can around and read the list of ingredients.

The one that immediately smacked me in the face was the 500% daily value of Vitamin C. No, that wasn’t a typo, verve really packs 5 days’ worth of Vitamin C into one little 8.3 oz can. Never again will I sip on a cup of orange juice when I get the sniffles. Aside from that massive amount of C, there’s 250% D3, 200% E, and 100% B12. Those are just some of your essential vitamins, if you were to look at the entire Nutritious Facts table you would see +100% of many of the things your body needs in order to be healthy are in a single serving. That’s impressive.

Now let’s discuss the other attributes of the drink. Your first whiff of Verve’s powerful mineral and vitamin filled formula is likely to leave you breathless. When compared to other similar products, however, it smells delicious. When doing side-by-side comparisons with other energy providing dietary supplements like I did you will quickly come to appreciate Verve’s soft scent which once seemed pungent and overpowering.

So the aroma is a winner when stacked against its competition, but how does it taste. Again, if Verve is the first real supplement you’ve ever had, you’re going to hate it. At first. Put it against a few other contenders in the battle for dietary supplement supremacy and you will again see Verve is the clear winner. And even if you don’t do a comparison, Verve’s natural and earthy flavor will grow on you and you will actually start to enjoy it.

I’m not going to lie, when I had my first can of Verve I didn’t want to finish it. However, for the sake of this review I pounded it back (sipped slowly) so I could feel the kind of kick it delivered. I knew it would be lackluster compared to drinks like Venom or Cocaine, but I walked away pleasantly surprised. Verve doesn’t supply a kick, really, but instead offers a very satisfying uplifting feeling that lasts near 8 hours. I felt comfortable, competent, focused, relaxed and ready as opposed to being constantly on edge and prepared to pounce at the first thing that so much as twitches in your peripheral.

On the value front, Verve isn’t cheap, but it’s definitely not a rip-off. While to price tag of about $2.70 for an 8.3 oz container may seem absolutely ludicrous, jump back up to the paragraph where I talked about the ingredients. Remember, Verve’s chemical composition is nearly the exact same as Vemma Juice, which will run consumers $30 for a 32 oz bottle. This is high quality stuff, ladies and gentlemen, and the price isn’t all that insane when you look at it’s competition. Instead you’ll find it to be right on par when it comes to value even though it offers a superior formula.

Just as one more quick note, Verve also comes in a sugar free supplement which, surprisingly, I preferred over the original. I usually refuse to drink or eat anything that is sugar free, but Verve’s healthier version is surprisingly the tastier of the two as well. There is also a Verve shot which I will be reviewing before too long.

Final Words:

Any serious athlete looking to boost their performance will love Verve! It’s filled to the brim with minerals and vitamins to make sure your body stays healthy and strong and give you an uplifting boost that will last most of your day. This product isn’t recommended for fans of energy drinks, but for anyone looking for a tasty new dietary supplement should hunt down a case immediately. Try looking here first.

For a second opinion, check out Energy Drink Fanatic’s review

Pros

Verve is both tastier and more aromatically pleasing than most of its competition

5 days worth of vitamin C

It really is insanely healthy

Cons

Not a product for fans of tasty energy drinks because…

it tastes and smells horrible compared to the more casual-consumer drinks

Score: 8.0/10 (Great)

Aroma: 8.0/10 (Sweet like candy, minerals are too powerful)
Taste: 8.0/10 (Better than a lot of other supplements, gritty minerals at the bottom of the can are offsetting)
Kick: 8.75/10 (Can’t call it a kick as much as a solid uplifting feeling that keeps you focused)
Value: 7.0/10 (Right on par with most of its competitors, but that’s still a little steep for the average consumer)

Everything should taste like bacon. That’s why one of the world’s most ingenious ideas came to fruition in 2007 and is now one of the most sought after spices in America, likely due to our love of eating. That idea, of course, was Bacon Salt. Justin and Dave, both bacon fanatics, concocted a spice so amazing that it has spread across the internet and America like wildfire. They pitched the idea to a few different people while on a business trip and, needless to say, they loved it. Is Bacon Salt really as good as everyone claims it to be? Well, read on to find out.

Review:

Before I start the review, let me remind you that this is just the Original flavor that I’m reviewing for today. I’ll make sure to pick up other bacon-y products to review, along with the other flavors of Bacon Salt. Now on to the part you guys have been waiting for.

J&D’s Bacon Salt does just as the name implies, makes whatever you put it on taste like bacon. So far I’ve tried it on french fries, hamburgers, and pizza. But then again, I’ve only had it for one day. I know you’re all dying to hear how it tastes on cake. But we’ll save that for another time.

Bacon Salt has a rather… unique smell to it. Not to say that it’s a bad smell, because it’s really not. I think it smells pretty good, and it makes my mouth start to water. However, it just doesn’t really smell much like bacon. Honestly, it almost smells like a mix between barbecue potato chips and the Doritos Late Night Tacos at Midnight chips. This is likely just the Original flavor that smells as such. I imagine the Hickory flavor would smell a lot more like bacon.

Bacon Salt gives food a strong, but not overpowering, bacon flavor. Due to it being artificially flavored, it doesn’t taste exactly like a batch of bacon out of the frying pan, but I’d say it’s about as close as it’s gonna get in my lifetime. The guys at J&D’s wanted to make a product that would make bacon lovers like me put it on everything they can imagine. Even cake. As far as the taste goes, they’ve succeeded with flying colors. This stuff is amazingly tasty!

Actually put to use, I’ve found that Bacon Salt seems to actually become a lot more flavorful if you allow it become hydrated. I’m not saying to put water in with your Bacon Salt! That would actually be a really bad idea. But if you have some greasy, or just juicy food, it seems to perform a lot better than on something such as french fries. As for the fries though, I decided to try a couple different things with them. I put a full platter of fries in the oven. Half of them with sprinklings of Bacon Salt, half of them plain. After the fries emerged from the oven, I sprinkled some Bacon Salt on the remaining untouched half. Unsurprisingly, the ones that were salted before being put into the oven tasted better. The ones that were originally unsalted were still very delicious though.

You may be thinking by now, “This stuff is surely terrible for your body!” Well, that’s not really true. Bacon Salt has low sodium, zero fat, zero calories, zero cholesterol, and zero carbohydrates! It’s also vegetarian and kosher!

Final Words:

Bacon Salt is an amazing product. It smells good (though not quite like bacon), is very tasty, and you can pick it up on their website for about $4.49 for a 2 ounce bottle. I think that price is actually very reasonable. I would definitely pay more than that for Bacon Salt. One last small note though, Bacon Salt doesn’t really have the texture you would think that salt would have. It’s more like a powder, like your every day seasonings.

Pros

It’s Bacon Salt

Reasonable price

Appetizing aroma

Amazingly tasty

Cons

You can’t marry it (at least not in the US)

While tasty, doesn’t have that right-out-of-the-skillet taste

Score: 9/10 (Superb)

Aroma: 8.5/10 (Bacon-like)
Flavor: 9.5/10 (Bacon)
Value: 9/10 (Bacon)

Describing Alternative/Rock/Kind-of Country-ish band Wilco to someone who has never listened to them can prove to be quite the difficult task, as I found out when my Nickelback listening co-workers replied to me that they had never so much as heard of the fantastic Chicago-based band. They aren’t exactly a “radio-friendly” band, especially in my area. But, over the last number of years, Wilco has been gaining quite a semi-underground following as a groovy band that produces original and award-winning music. And on April 16th, 2009, I was given the opportunity to watch this band perform live, and I have to be honest when I say that they put on one of the most enjoyable, well-rounded, and overall BEST shows I have ever been to.

Review

After an eclectic opening act, Wilco took the stage to thunderous applause, and commenced to rocking everyone in the Indiana University Auditorium’s faces right off. They dove head-first into the warm waters of their ENTIRE album-catalog, playing for a solid 120 minutes. Yes, that’s right. Wilco, a Grammy-Award winning band (for their 2004 album “A Ghost is Born…”) played to a crowd of college students for TWO HOURS.

And I’ll be honest. Not once during that epic two-hour set did I tire of watching this band, headed by mastermind Jeff Tweedy, display a mastery of each of their respective instruments, segwaying into each song after a brilliant ending to the previous song (A skill Tweedy himself seemed quite proud of, as he would vocalize to the crowd in attendance).

26 songs. Most bands are pretentious enough to charge $50 for a Lawn Ticket, play for an hour, come on stage for a quick ten-minute Encore, and walk off stage to thunderous applause having disregarded a number of their popular songs in an effort to push their newer (oftentimes yet unheard) tunes. Wilco did none of that. They played 26 songs, each could be found on their previously released albums. It struck me they haven’t put out a new studio album since 2007, and I expected the show to be full of the music they are undoubtedly working on.

And then it struck me this band in particular, loves to perform to crowds of fans. They love, not to play songs they haven’t heard and won’t be able to sing along to, get involved in the show with, get chills when the notes are struck. (“Impossible Germany” particularly chilled me to the core).

The band appeared to be having the time of their lives playing to a crowd of rabid fans, and that was to be expected. A band full of true musicians, playing for a genuine love of their music and not the almighty DOLLAR. A band just happy to be doing what they love, for people who love what they do.

It was a treat to be full of an auditorium full of Wilco fans (and probably a number of people who were taking a chance on a live show, and walked out Wilco fans). I sat in the front row, center section of the balcony, truly a perfect seat. And I got to watch a band of masters of their craft do what they do best.

Tweedy and the gang put on a simple show, full of songs I love, in a manner I love. I was able to sit back, relax, prop my feet up on the railing of the balcony and just observe truly on the most underrated, criminally unheard bands of my generation.

Final Words:

I would categorize their show as one of, if not THE single best concert I have ever been to. Sure, it was small in scale, and not grand in production, but what it lacked in in-your-face concert theatrics, Wilco more than made up for by playing their music for two full hours. The crowd showed them love, and they showed it right back. And, I’m quite sure had it been physically possible, the entire crowd would have made sweet, passionate, epic love to the band, and even cuddled afterwards. Anything for a little more time with WILCO.

Set List:

You Are My Face
I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
Company In My Back
Handshake Drugs
Pot Kettle Black

I generally am not someone who enjoys watching horror movies. In fact, I would say it’s my least favorite movie genre. I do however like to appear smarter than I actually am by flaunting my appreciation of critically acclaimed films. So when I saw Rotten Tomatoes had a whopping 98% rating for the Swedish vampire flick “Let The Right One In,” I felt obliged to check it out. Not only was it bursting with acclaim, but it was also foreign, thus doubling my chances of looking like a film scholar. Well, luckily for me and my pursuits of fraudulent intellectualism, the film is very deserving of its critical praise.

Review:

“Let The Right One In,” is the story of a twelve-year-old boy named Oskar, a lonely child of divorce who is mercilessly bullied at school. One night while fantasizing of taking revenge on his tormentors, he meets a girl named Eli who lives in his apartment complex. The two form a close friendship, which ultimately becomes complicated with the revelation that Eli is a vampire.

Although one of the primary characters is, in fact, a vampire, this really isn’t the vocal point of the movie. It’s really about the friendship that forms between the two lonely outsiders. It’s about two kids who don’t really have anyone else to lean on and find solace in each other, and as the movie goes along, they each become more isolated, helping them form an even tighter bond. She helps him find the courage to stand up to the kids who torture him, while he helps her feel like a “regular” twelve year old.

Though the movie is effectively creepy, I think the main reason it works is that it doesn’t seem like it’s trying that hard to be scary. I guess the best comparison I can make would be to “The Strangers,” which is the last horror movie I can recall seeing. This movie was essential 90 minutes of psychopaths sneaking up on people, then vanishing off camera right before the characters saw them. This kind of film making holds no substance to me, as it may be creepy initially, but ends up seeming pointless upon reflection once you realize the characters are acting more at the convenience of the movie rather than the situation.

I felt the opposite about “Let The Right One In.” This film really plays well into the school of thought that what you don’t show is scarier than what you do because of what our imaginations envisioned to have happened. Without giving too much away, the big climactic scene of the movie occurs at a public swimming pool. The scene is very brutal, but instead of showing us what happens, director Tomas Alfredson chooses rather to focus on the aftermath. The results are both effective and bone chilling. In fact, the only scene in the movie I felt truly didn’t work was a scene involving one of Eli’s victims being tormented by cats in which the brutality is on full display.

The minimalism approach is also beneficial to the actors. Nothing can kill a movie faster than a bad child performance (see: “Phantom Menace”). And usually nothing brings the worst out of kid actors more than trying to have them trying to appear creepy and menacing. That’s why I liked that Eli (played by first timer Lina Leandersson) doesn’t seem to enjoy preying on her victims. When we see her face after an attack, she looks sad and helpless. I liked that she was portrayed as an unfortunate victim of circumstance as opposed to a conscious free, blood-thirsty monster.

Final Words:

As I admitted earlier, I am not a horror movie fan, nor am I in anyway knowledgeable on vampire lore. Outside of reading “Dracula” for an English class my Freshman year of College I have little to no experience following vampires in either film or literature. But as someone who enjoys effectively made films with solid character development, I found much to like about “Let The Right One In.” It didn’t rely on stupid horror movie tricks or try to boggle our minds with an unnecessary twist like a certain French piece of shit I reviewed a few months back. It never tries to do anything more than tell the story that’s being told and it’s a stronger film because of this approach.

Apparently an American version entitled “Let Me In,” directed by Matt Reeves is set to be released next year. Reeves previously made “Cloverfield” another movie I felt was much stronger when it was showing us the aftermath of carnage rather than the act itself. While it would be stupid and pointless for him to simply make the same movie as the Swedish original, hopefully he has the smarts to stick with the “less is more” style that made this movie work so well.

Pros

Creepy

Very well made

Good performances

Cons

Cat scene

The storyline of Oskar’s parents divorce was a tad underdeveloped

Final Score: 8.3/10 (Great)
